Outstanding Article Award

For an outstanding peer-reviewed article published in SAJS during the year that:

  • advances the mission of the SAJS – to publish high-quality original research from Africa or on African-relevant issues that will be of interest to readers in any discipline and for the benefit of scholars, educators, the general public and policymakers;
  • makes an important contribution to knowledge; and
  • is accessible and eloquent.

The winning article will be chosen by a vote by a sub-committee of the Editorial Advisory Board from nominations received from the editorial board. Each Associate Editor will nominate an article from within their portfolio. Nominations will close in December. The winner will be announced in March of the following year.

The corresponding author of the winning article will receive a monetary award and a certificate. Nominees will also receive a certificate.


Outstanding Reviewer Award

Outstanding Reviewer Award logo

For a peer reviewer of an SAJS manuscript reviewed during the year who:

  • provides a well-substantiated opinion on the quality and suitability of the manuscript for the SAJS;
  • provides insightful feedback to the author(s) that will help them to improve the manuscript;
  • is collegial and constructive in purpose and tone; and
  • responds timeously.

The winning Reviewer will be chosen by a vote by a sub-committee of the Editorial Advisory Board from nominations received from the editorial board. Each Associate Editor will nominate a Reviewer from within their portfolio. Nominations will close in December. The winner will be announced in March of the following year.

The winner will receive a monetary award and a certificate. Nominees will also receive a certificate.

Any articles authored by the nominated Reviewers that are accepted by SAJS during the year proceeding their nomination/award will receive priority publication.


SAJS Editorial Advisory Board Members and Associate Editors are not eligible for the awards.

We reserve the right not to make an award in any year.
